Here are the Ea Tolkien Society Meeting Notes from March 14th, 2015. Thank you Brian!

March 14, 2015
@ Hawke Robinson's home
Attending: Hawke, Richard (Chris via Google Hangout)
1. Congratulations to Chris K for becoming a member of the Tolkien Society.
All of us are paid members now. CK mentioned that our smial is still not on
the website map of smials. HR has sent in request for change but it still
has not been added at this date.
2. HR read minutes of February's meeting. Discussion about upcoming Tolkien
Moot in 3rd weekend of July. Theme is Giants: Ents/trolls/mountain
giants/dragons/balrogs if needed. Giant beings and beasts. Start
researching giant material in the Tolkien legendarium.
3. HR introduced elvish vocabulary from Vinyar Tengwar, for nose: nenowe,
and mouth: pe' or ando.
4. RB mentioned seeing the 3rd Hobbit movie. Further discussion of "Battle
of 5 Armies" and Jackson's departure from the Hobbit book. Note Ratliffe's
comments in History of the Hobbit. p. 595 "Arkenstone as Silmaril"... first
phase was for Thorin to succumb to dragon-sickness; later version the
dwarves are not infected with it. Gem of Girion became necklace of Girion
in book. Also talked about was the depiction of  the dragon... RB found
this not done well. CK referred to Farmer Giles of Ham, in which Tolkien
depicted Chrysophylax the dragon (more "positive" encounter between dragon
and man).
5. Letter 96 read by all, taking turns.
*Tolkien discusses the literary value of the Bible on its own merit.
*Reference of LOTR to his son Christopher: the Ring... Sam's tough word &
Gollum almost repented. "The untold story is the most moving." HR's
connection with Lovecraft... a writer describes without telling all.
* JRRT's connection to contemporary history: Russians 60 miles from Berlin.
Why gloat? Only the machines triumphant...
6. Afterward, a long-ranging discussion about using subtlety in writing vs.
telling all (Robert Jordan, etc.).
7. Hawke's conference presentation on recreational therapy is at our
scheduled weekend in April, so it will be necessary to make other
arrangements. Venue and time will be posted to the website for April's
meeting.
