April 20, 2019
Present: Zach, Chris, Richard, Brian, Hawke

1. Recap of the March meeting notes
*Tolkien and his treatment of magic (see Letters #155)
*important articles on this topic in Other Minds magazine: Chris Seaman,
Thomas Morwinsky, and Neville Percy (Osric)
*proper relationship between awe and magic
*reference to the Two Trees in the Fall of Gondolin (Brian shared a chart
of the "descendants" of the Two Trees of Valinor)

2. We continued reading The Fall of Gondolin (earlier detailed version of
the Tale), from Tuor's meeting with Turgon to p. 76, "This was the fashion."
*Gondolin had some kind of protection, similar to the Girdle of Melian
around the forest of Doriath. Discussion.
*Infant Eärendil/prophecies that he will fulfill; his survival of the Fall
of Gondolin is key.
*The Capture of Maeglin
*Balrogs & dragons: their natures as originally envisaged by Tolkien, vs.
how they are depicted in later versions.

3. We read Letters of JRR Tolkien 156, the 1st part.
*The Smeagol character
*We stopped at "Men have fallen."

4. Check out Other Minds issue 20 which was recently published.

5. Our next meeting will be Saturday, May 18, 1-3 pm @ Hawke's recording
studio (in garage).

If any of you are able to come, please "Reply All" so Hawke and I know how
many to expect.
